Chain slipping after replacing chains and cassette

Hi,

My chain was slipping pretty badly last week so I replaced the chain and cassette which has made a difference, but it's still slipping quite badly if I try and give it some welly up hills.

I wondered if it was worn chainrings causing this, but they don't look too bad to me (though I'm no expert!).

What do you think? This need replacing? Or could it be something else? I'm pretty new to bike maintenance so I could well have done something wrong when fitting the cassette/chain..

And if that does need replacing, how do I go about finding what chainring to replace it with? I know my current chainset is a Truvativ Touro compact 50x36T, though I'm not sure exactly what I need to be looking for to ensure I buy compatible chainrings?

Many thanks!

Pete

Those look like shark teeth to me, which means its time to change them over.

Where is the chain slipping - on the cassette or chainrings? You can get chain slip as you describe if the rear derailleur cable has stretched. Just need to tweak the barrel adjuster to get the alignment right.

  • Can you not also experience what seems like chain slip if the chain is slightly too long and the derailleur can't take up all the slack?

Almost any standard ring (ie not the recent sculpted offerings from Shimano) will fit as long as they are 5 bolt and (for a compact) 110mm BCD (Bolt Circle Diameter) So FSA or Stronglight or Campag or Rotor etc etc. will do.

That looks pretty worn to me and a replacement would almost deifinitely sort you slipping problems

I bought one of these as a replacement the other week. Seem decent quality for the price. Probably won't last as long as some of the more expensive options, but I can deal with that for the price.

I assume you're on the inner ring going uphill, and that doesn't look so bad. My guess is your indexing is off. Also check the chain is joined properly.
  • Thanks for all the tips guys!

Was going to start by trying to checking the chain and adjusting the derailleur cable this weekend but didn't get a chance.

But… I have done about about 100 or so miles on the new chain+cassette now and it seems to have got a lot better - seems to slowly have been settling in, hopefully this will continue!

Hopefully will get a chance to have a better look this weekend.

That chainring will just accelerate the wear of the chain so I would change that straight away.
