Hi all I am taking part in a cycle challenge at work as part of Sport Relief today.

We have some exercise bikes and the challenge is cycle as far as you can in a minute.

Now do I put it on a low gear and spin fast or a hard gear and stand and sprint for as long as I can?

I must win, advice required.

Thanks in advance!

Well there is one way to find out you know?

If you're talking distance then yeah a big gear and and absolutely mash it out for 60 seconds.

If they're regular spin bikes, then they don't have gearing - just resistance. Check how they're recording distance (rotations?) and confirm it's not properly geared - just a glorified hand-brake.

If that's the case, turn it down and spin to win.

They seem to be standard exercise bikes, not the spin bikes...

Most standard exercise bikes just work via rotations recorded and effort/resistance isn't taken into account.

Well I won, took off way too hard, and was stood up the whole way through.

Couldnt talk for 10 mins after either and was still sweating like a pig about 15mins after.

The bike isnt that hi-tech so it only recorded in 0.1 of a km.

I managed 0.6 everyone else was 0.5 or less.

I didnt cycle in today but would have been hilarious if I had stepped up in full kit for a minutes challenge.

Worst thing was I had to be in a meeting immediately after and I was pretty much wheezing everything i was saying!

You should have taken in your own pedals and shoes and swapped them over!
