Junior taster sessions - Glasgow velodrome
Hi all,
Looking for stuff to do when the kids are off at Easter and fancy them having a go at the velodrome.
Glasgow velodrome do junior (8-12) taster sessions that look interesting, my kids are 8 & 9.
Anyone been along with their kids? Are they expected to ride clipped in & fixed?
Cheers

I've just emailed them last night on the very subject, asking for further information. I'm planning a break in Glasgow during July and August and hoping to take my 10yo nephew along once the Commonwealth games have finished (assuming it will be open again fairly shortly afterwards). If I receive the info you require I'll post it up. Or, you could email or phone them directly and ask.0 -
The bikes will be fixed however toe clips are available if needed on the kids bikes. Try and book as soon as possible as the taster sessions can be very popular - the adult accreditations sell out as soon as they go online at 5am on a sunday morning.
Good luck getting a reply to your emails asking for information. The coaches are really good with kids (and adults!) and the mechanics are helpful too, but the booking process / finding out information can be hit and miss in terms od customer service (this is a Glasgow Life problem rather than the velodrome staff).0 -
Thanks. Have booked them in for 7th April, seems that they will be on fixed, clipped in, drop bars & no brakes - what could possibly go wrong! Am sure they will figure it out!0

Like most taster sessions the coaches will introduce them gently, starting with how to ride a fixed bike. From my experience of coaching kids, they pick up riding fixed surprisingly fast. I expect they will gradually get them riding up the track, going higher as hey settle in. Will be good fun!Blogging about junior road bikes http://junior-road-bikes.tumblr.com0

Why not ride Meadowbank? The UK's longest standing steeply banked velodrome.

I've made the assumption it isn't necessary for a 'Come 'n Try' session. However, can anyone tell me if I need to be a BC member to participate in the Level 1 accreditation sessions?
I'm not holding out my hopes that anything will be run when I'm back in Glasgow over Xmas and into January but if there is, I'd like to try for a session on it. Though I attended the opening track session at the Commonwealth Games when I was last over, unfortunately it was closed for public use for the remainder of the visit.
I'll get on it some day...just hope I can still climb onto a bike when that day comes0 -

Only need to be a member of BC to race in the track league, accreditations and drop ins are open to all. You'll need to register for online booking some details at http://www.emiratesarena.co.uk/cycling/Pages/booking-form.aspx0 -

Thanks for that information. Do you know at what part of the month they open the bookings up? Apologies for all the questions, the last time I tried contacting the office for myself and nephew, despite more than one email to them, they didn't reply.0 -

The last person i know that went through the accreditation would set his alarm for 5am on a sunday but i'm not sure if that is still the case. Worth checking next sunday if anything more appears available to book, wont be quite so uncivilised an hour for you.0 -
