When you have higuita, roglic and any other jumbo vista rider all wearing yellow, it can get a bit tricky at a glance.

Fortunately Jumbo will be changing to black for the Tour

Fair play to Kirby today - in the final thirty seconds when the director mashed buttons like a kid playing Street Fighter II for the first time and there was absolutely no way to have a clue what was happening, he managed to do a pretty good job of keeping it together and calling the finish more or less right on the basis of about half a second of footage.

Maybe it's when he has chance to think that there's a problem?

I immediately thought he'd called it wrong from my tiny laptop screen.

Looks like Chris Horner isn't a fan of Carlton either... (skip to 13:09 if you don't want to watch the full thing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L9MXywRCZg

Just to clarify Rich's post, here's something for Fanboy Rick and anybody who fancies joining in. Vote for that Tour jersey.

I think you misunderstand - he did call the wrong winner, obviously.

Or just listen to the first 20 seconds.
Horner not so clever himself. Can't call the correct Jumbo rider and apparently the winner of yesterday's stage was a German power company.

I spent a few minutes watching yesterday's highlights. Brian Smith was in the middle of making some point and Kirby started talking all over him. He then tried to bring Smith back in but there were several seconds before he finally responded and Kirby apologised for cutting him off. I did wonder whether he had just had enough.

Apparently there's a petition going round to get rid of him. Jose Been saying how terrible it is.

How terrible it is that there's a petition or how terrible it is working with him?

Ha, it was a genuine question in this case. I'd initially read Bob's post that the other presenters had started a petition to get rid of him and that Been was saying how terrible it is working with him but on re-reading I interpreted it correctly.

Fark me, I sometimes find his commentary irritating, but getting a petition going to get rid of him? Just email Eurosport and complain. Starting a petition about something as insignificant as this is just mean-spirited self-indulgence.

Which is why it should be ignored immediately and mocked. Anything else is just an over-reaction. Almost all online petitions are pointless nonsense

The curse of the Internet age: everyone's got a voice and thinks theirs should be heard above the others (he says un-ironically on an online forum...)

Yeah ultimately it's up to those who employ him to decide if they are doing what he's paid for. I can't stand listening to him but don't wish him ill, maybe they could take him to one side and say he's losing them viewers and to re-think his style but even on here there are some that seem to think he is OK so maybe there are a lot of people who like him being 'different'.

I do feel he's getting worse rather than better, I used to doing him mildly annoying but now he ruins my viewing. It could just be that there are far better options now though that are really highlighting the things that annoy me.

I think Eurosport has plenty of other good commentators who do a better job, and I can understand people not liking his commentary. I just can't bring myself to get that worked up about someone who seems like a decent fella, if not a great commentator.

How old is Kirby? He seems around retirement age. I don't doubt he's great company and that's why I still thinks he's entertaining when nothing is happening or likely to happen.

They should put him on for the first stint and then hand over to someone competent for the proper bits. But he seems to have been there so long he gets all the prime spots.

Imagine if all the Eurosport presenters started a petition to get rid of another presenter. That would be very entertaining.

It's like cycling itself. There are leaders and domestiques. When Harmon was the leader he was an excellent domestique. But now he's the leader he has his moments but he's not up to it. He needs to understand his role, like Richie Porte did.

That's it - I used to listen to him, and ignore various bits, or just think well that's the way it is, but with all of the other new to us commentators, such as Lloyd, Blythe, Stephens, his commentating style is now contrastingly obviously (to me) hugely inferior, and exactly the same as you, he now can comprehensively ruin what should be a fine sporting event.

A good commentator should hopefully add to, and enhance an event, or at the least not detract from it - if that starts to happen, then it ceases to add any value.

I was watching Stage 4 I think it was of the Volta Catalunya earlier this evening, commentating on the peloton had been on going for a numebr of miles, and he Ineos had been on the right hand side of the road, or the left hand side as we looked at it on the TV cameras - they had been installed for some time, on that side, lined out, not budging - he had even correctly noted this fact.

Several km later on, and he now states that Ineos have moved to the left hand side of the road having been on the right, and that something must have happened to cause this, perhaps to do with the town they had gone through or something of that ilk, but they were glaringly still on the right hand side of the road as they had been for many kilometres.

I think at around this time he also stated that 'here goes Team DSN' when all the teams were lined out across the road, and no such thing was occurring.

    WTAF.

I can imagine him potentially making a passable golfing commentator, or darts, but for cycling, he is found wanting - potentially the Aru of commentatiing.

I object to this. Aru is much maligned. But he achieved plenty in his first few years before the injury problems kicked in.

Surprised no one has posted the tweet in question, but there are two.
The second one mentions that Jose and Magnus will be commentating on Valencianna, next week.
I know that news will also not please some. Anyone who has heard her knows that as with Carlton, she also favours the more is actually a lot less approach to the spoken word.
    Here is the second tweet.

Commentary in almost all sports just ain't what it used to be, it's just with cycling, the problem seems more acute.
