I'm hiring a bike for a day in Cape Town, rough idea is just to cycle along the coast (probably cape Argus route)

Anyone done it on their own?

Is it safe?!

Any particular areas to avoid?

I've holidayed and ridden quite a bit around Cape Town and have never had any problems security wise. As for places to avoid I would say avoid the eastern suburbs, Newlands, Plumstead, Kenilworth etc, not because the are particularly dangerous just that the roads are very busy and the cycling is not worth the effort. Also avoid Michells Plain and the Cape Flats out towards the airport as these are the main township areas and unfortunately are dangerous.

A ride down to Cape Point through the nature reserve is very rewarding and bikes used to be allowed into the national park for free.
