Gear Cabling Sram Red issues

Looking some advice here, have cabled multiple Shimano bikes but never a SRAM before. I worked out the brake cable ok but the gear cables are roving more tricky. After a bit of googling I located the hole for the gear cable on the inner aspect of the shifter but no matter what I try I can thread the cable through neither side, it's like hitting a brick wall. The shifters have been set up so the tiny cable hole is directly in line with the out hole but still no joy.
2012 Red 10 Speed if it makes any odds, all advice appreciated
thanks

  • Never worry got it sorted, for future reference, wiggling the shift lever about while threading seems to make it possible, not a great system to be honest!

It isn't a problem confined to the Red shifters but for all SRAM shifters. It's a fiddly art and only slightly easier when removing the side plate from the shifter. Sometimes putting a slight bend in the cable helps as does a liberal squirt with WD40.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

If you use normal 1.2mm cables they're a pain but use the SRAM 1.1mm cables and they go in a lot easier.
