Looking to make the jump to a decent hardtail but unsure what's the best can get for this figure? Wanting something relatively light and strong. Needs to be able to get uphill reasonably but can go downhill, too, riding around a lot of single track trail centres.

looking at a 16" frame. i have been looking at the on-ones but the steel frame not carbon, a bit weary of how many crashes it could take

No problem with the carbon at all strength wise.

I've recently got the (steel) On One 45650b and am loving it!

Its a very capable bike! I had the Boardman Team HT before (2012, 26" wheel model) which was good too ... lighter than the On One (although not by that much!) ... but I'm very pleased that I've made the swap. The geometry and 140mm fork on the On One make it significantly more confidence-inspiring on steeper and more technical stuff, without losing much in the way of xc / climbing ability. I think the larger wheels, bigger rubber, and reverb dropper that I spec'd on it have also contributed to my greater confidence on it. So, its great on all the local trails and singletrack, and I'm expecting it to shine at trail centres and big days out in Wales, the Lakes etc. And I know that looks shouldn't count ... but the fact that the 'super raw' finish looks fabulous IMHO is a bonus!

£899 for the stock model, or £1049 with dropper.

Or, as mentioned above, the new Carbon On One 456 - likely to be very capable, plus a bit lighter too. A bit over budget at £1099 (and 'only' 26" wheels), but I'd have been very tempted if that had been launched at the time I ordered mine.

All very good suggestions so far - Vitus at CRC might be worth a look too but I think the carbon 456 is stonking value & plenty tough. Also this if you like big wheels: http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/produ ... _2013_Bike

Really am tempted by the on-one, look awesome!
