Do I buy this Genius 30

Hi all, fairly long break from the MTB world due to surgery. Have been offered the following bike for £1k OVNO. It looks great but I hear not so great things about the pull shock. Im into XC and single track so South downs way and woodland ride like Stanmer and Friston Forrest.
Is this bike worth a punt or not? SPec below
Scott Genius 30.
Carbon frame Large. Ex demo 2009 purchased 2010. Bar mounted adjustable rear suspension. Lockout, 100,150mm using the Equalizer 2 rear shock.
Fitted out with.
Roval Traverse wheel set running ceramic bearings in rear and currently set up to run Tubeless tyre setup.
Fox Talas RLC Front forks. Adjustable from 110,130,150mm. Bolt through axle.
Red Magura Mantra brake set with Carbon levers.
XTR Front chainset, pedals and rear Derailleur. New Granny ring fitted.
New Red rear cogs and chain.
The whole lot cost around 3.5k and has had about 18 months use. It has been stood in my garage for around 2 years as I get other bikes to demo now. It has not been hammered, I am in my late 50s so no launching myself off stupid things and hoping the bike will survive.
Frame is covered in 3m copter tape to help protect the Carbon. Although not from new. It is used on rotor blades I believe to stop damage.
Front and rear shocks serviced before before storage.

Nice bikes, the lad has an RC20 we rebuilt from a bare frame of similar vintage, some points to note
1/ CF front, alloy rear traingle
2/ Seatpost is prone to seizing due to the diameter
3/ The older shock 9not sure about yours) is prone to losing lockout
4/ Fox Forks MUST be looked after, check especially for scuffing/scoring of the stanchions.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
It's a good bike, but the Genius is a bit of a Marmite bike.
I rode one of around that vintage and I hated it. Just didn't feel right at all.
Seeing as you already have it, I'd get out on it and see how it feels to you0 -
Thanks all, I dont have it yet as its up in Yorkshire and im down south. Its one of those situations where I cant afford a new bike but wondering if this one is worth a grand used. Not going to be able to try it before I buy so a risk. My last bike was a 2004 Specialised Enduro Comp. Felt a bit to short for my liking but still loved the bike.Cheers

Not now that its 5 years old. The Fox Talas forks from back then were particularly badly damped.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

£1000 is too much. It's pretty old now...maybe £600?
You can get a brand new 2012 model for £1600 at Paulscycles.0 -
^this.
Plus if you are into XC and single track I'm not sure it is the right bike for you anyway.0 -
Good point. So what would you recommend? I can't believe how so much has changed since I was last out there seriously.Cheers

There are loads of choice to suit your riding style and budget. I would go for a 2013 Giant Trance X or Anthem X. Both are excellent bikes, lighter than an old carbon genius and with a bit of googling you should find one for a grand new.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

I would avoid. My friends 08 one had the wrong size shock pins from manufacture (which i read is a problem) and had rear end alignment issues meaning his mech hangar (which isnt replaceable) kept bending under load.coiler - http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/1463278/

I built up a 2008 Genius (none carbon) and loved it. Pull shock took a bit of setting up but once sorted it was excellent and never had any problems with it but.......that is not worth a grand and as others have said look towards an Anthem or similar for XC.__________________

Anthem is a good shout, but there are plenty of other decent discounted full sussers around, how big are you?0 -
6ft tall and 15st. Prefer a roomier cockpit rather than being too bunched upCheers

Anthem is nice and roomy. Im 6'1" and 14 st and found my old large Anthem very comfyTransition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

An RC20 recently sold on ebay for £680, that I thought was a bit 'generous' I'd value that bike at about the same.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
