Possibly a daft question....
I have Ultegra 6800 with a compact chainset. Its worked like a dream since I got it in November. However on todays ride when I tried to change from the inner ring the derailleur moved across but it didnt pick up the chain. I would then have to hold it in and try 5 or 6 times before it would work. This wasnt a one off and it happened all ride.
Anyone come across this, if so simple fix for a complete non mechanically minded individual? I dont want to take it to LBS if its a simple adjustment.
Thanks in advance.....

Paul

  • I would guess that either the derailleur is dirty or the cable is rubbing somewhere and stuck.

Has the bit of plastic dropped off the front derailleur? If it has I'd guess the the derailleur will need setting up again.

The bit of plastic is fitted to the inside of the back plate on the derailleur, god knows what it does but mine flicked off when I was setting the mech up and I had to start from scratch again.
Poor description and a little vague but someone else might be able to enlighten you a little more.

May well be that you just need to twist the barrel adjuster on the cable (should be up near the bars) because the cable has bedded in and stretched a bit from new. Happens on most bikes. It's easy to do the adjustment. I just put the bike upside down on the kitchen table and move the adjuster a quarter turn at a time until the chain changes smoothly again when I turn the pedals by hand. You're looking to lengthen the whole barrel adjuster by turning it so that the telescoping bit moves out a little. Be careful to note where you started from so that you can return it to where it was if this doesn't help.

^ what he said. Your cable tension is out, couple of tweaks of the barrel adjuster will sort it.
