    I've heard of hardware improvements that were introduced in later versions of particular models being identified by the serial number being less than or greater than a certain number. I'd hit the Garmin forums for people more knowledgeable with your device, but as far putting an actual date on it, I think you'd have to contact Garmin as suggested.
