Di2 gears clicking

Hi,
Got a slight problem with my 6870 gears clicking. It's seems to only happen in the first half of the cassette, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th and it comes from under load eg accelerating or when going up a hill. It's definitely coming from the rear mech/cassette area. The mech's adjustment is dead central to the cassette and the noise has got me stumped on what it could be. Cassette is ultegra along with the chain.

Any ideas?

Have you tried adjusting on the hoof? It's one of the easy things on Di2: whilst riding, hold the button in and adjust the RD until the noise goes. Hold the button in again and you're back to shifting.

I assume all the other bits of the drive chain are OK - jockey wheels, mech hanger etc ? I've had Di2 on one of my bikes for 2 years and it has been totally faultless. As it has on my other roadie over the last 8 months.

    Mech hanger straight?

Chain has speed link? Is that and other links in good working oreder? Chain directional?

Presume you've tried the normal setup routine, put bike on stand, select gear 4 (I think or maybe 5), put into adjust RD mode by holding the button for 1/2 second, adjust towards the biggest cog, until it just rubs, then adjust back by 4 presses, once done hold button for 1/2 second to come out of trim mode. Once done if not perfect, then as said above, adjust slightly on a ride using same press button for 1/2 seconds to put into trim mode.

    This has still got me stumped. Just seems to occur in the top half of the cassette, 1st to 5th, just clicks under load eg when pulling away from lights or hill climbing. This is the list I've tried;

Indexed gears by 5th adjusting until ribs 4th then down shifting 4 presses.
    Nipped up chainring bolts
    Greased pedal threads
    Greased bb axle
    Swapped qr axle

Do you think a bent hanger could cause the noise? Maybe something wrong with the cassette?

    Thanks,
    Simon

Try adjusting an extra click or two. Also I presume you have the right spacers, on my 10 I had the 1mm but not the 1.8mm also needed.

Spacers? It's 11 speed on a dura ace 9000 wheel so don't think you need spacers?
  • If it's happening just under load and not on the work stand, it could be that your getting a lot of flex at the bottom bracket, temporarily putting the chain out of line under power. Just a thought.

Yep, sounds like a frame or hub flex issue, rather than a gear adjustment issue.

Especially as you have indexed the gears as above.

Noise is still there. Could it be linked to the b-tension adjustment?

Replaced the mech hanger and noise is still there. This is driving me insane.
  • What size is the cassette? And what Di2 rear derailleur size is it? Long or short cage?

Just because it's new doesn't mean it's aligned - have you had it checked?
I'm left handed, if that matters.
