Fitting SLX to 2008 GT Avalanche Expert

Hi All,
I would appreciate any guidance that anyone can give on this.
I am the proud owner of a 2008 GT Avalanche Expert (http://www.evanscycles.com/products/gt/ ... 7#features) and am looking to upgrade the braking system, mostly as a treat to myself but also cause it seems to be going through pads, and piston leakage.
The problem is that I am struggling to understand whether the SLX would be compatible, I am not the most technically gifted of people but want to start to develop my bike fixing knowledge so thought this might be a good place to start.
Can anyone shed any light for me and if the SLX is not compatible what would you recommend, in terms of price point and quality that is?
Thanks,
