How well do the bikes suit the teams?

This may have been done before but I couldn't find it. How well does each team's bike suit the team? Subjective obviously and just for a bit of fun.
Most obvious disparity for me is Cofidis riding Looks, such nice stylish bikes for such a mediocre team.
I think Garmin and cervelo go well. Sky and pinarello...not so sure, Pinarello are a bit style over substance for me which is pretty much the opposite if Sky's MO.
Any more for any more?

Bit harsh on Pinarello considering how many Tours have been won on them over the years.

Confidis and Look is a pretty good partnership I thought. French Team with French bikes and French gear (Mavic) pretty French.

I'm not sure of the stats but if you looks at how many TDFs have been won on Pinarellos then I reckon they would be up there (Trek were doing pretty well until they were taken away) Sky have won the last two TDFs so it's a pretty good choice I thought.

Canyon and Movistar seems weird to me as that team in its various incarnations has been Pinarello basically forever.

BMC, Giant, Trek and Cannondale all have well suited bikes. Beyond that the bikes are pretty much the same anyway.

Of the last 14 different people to win the Tour de France, seven did it on a Pinarello (Froome, Wiggins, Pereiro, Ullrich, Riis, Indurain, Delgado)

  • How many people would take a dogma over an Cervelo R5, a Ridley Noah, a Spec Venge etc etc? I know I wouldn't, they aren't particularly light, they aren't particularly stiff or aero, the above pedigree is just testament to how it's the engine rather than the bike, I think Froome would have won last year on a Specialized Allez ;) The graal was also renowned for being relatively "slow"
This was only a bit of banter though, not meant to be Sky bashing.

Most bikes suit the teams, as they have wheels and pedals and stuff. I suppose the synergy between the graphical presentation of the brands is about all there would be to discuss.

I also agree with mulletmaster, maybe not on the particular alternatives, but lusting after a Dogmuck is the reserve of some people with either questionable taste, uncontrollable sky leanings, or both.

While I wouldn't buy one in Sky colours, I'd take a Dogma over any of the above choices any and every day of the week.

A pity nobody rides Time any more in the pro teams.

I read a review of the Dogma recently in cyclist, the guy was not convinced by it before but spoke very highly of it after he rode it. Note that pinarello don't have an aero bike and a grand tour one like many others, the dogma has to do everything

The aero road bike thing is a pretty much an overstated advantage anyway, it's possible to make an argument that everybody in pro races should be riding one but they don't. Plus, we're yet to see a race where all the people on aero bikes cross the line first followed by all the people not on them. If pro's don't much benefit from them then it's unlikely joe bloggs will, even when combined with his standard issue 50mm clinchers, considered purchase lowest rolling resistance tyres and oakley berkpaths.

Out of that lot I would have the Dogma. The only one of those that would even tempt me would be the Noah.

Is it published anywhere, or anyone with any inside information care to share. But I was wondering what sort of money is involved in these arrangements. For Example would Sky get all the bikes for free, along with a payment, and perhaps other considerations, or would it be just the bikes. Would smaller teams actually pay for bikes? Someone at the top end like OPQS riding Specialized, which I think Cav for example had some either personal arrangement with, or stated desire to ride their bikes, (seem to remember this was part of the problem of him going to Sky) would they get paid by Specialized beyond lots of free bikes and kit?
Also, and I'm not familiar with who owns who at some broader level, but when riders use Q rings or other bits not made by the bike manufacturer, is it a case of just blanking logos, or is this something where a blind eye is turned?

:) yeah, and doubly cool if ridden if you are overweight and have put lashings of spacers under the stem to make sure you're sat way up in the wind.

Ideally the bike should come from the same country as the team. Mind you that would mean bye bye to Giant and Merida.

I always liked Rock Racing riding De Rosa. Something about the mix of the bratty punky dopers on the traditional machines appeals to me.

    Why?
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

    Why?

Well, the question was about bikes 'suiting' the team and I think there's something about objects from the same culture that go togther. I just like the image of Saronni on a Campag eqiuiped Colnago and Hinault on a Gitane or LOOK.

I have always been amazed that Sky ride Pinarello's

    They are so heavy.

Garmin and Cervelo is a good match.

Weight limit should be dropped to at least 12lbs. That's easy for most teams to meet.

I would like to see some AX Lightness bikes or Parlee or custom Spin bikes or Rolo in the peloton .

I doubt it will ever happen.

Is the Sky bike not 6.8kg?
  • Not sure how well Canyon and Movi go together. Canyon seem very teutonic, efficient and precise perhaps Sky should have done a deal with them and let Movi keep Pina!
