I used to have Ergon Grips on my hybridised rigid MTB.

Just don't lodge them in your face on a fall, I still have the scar...
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Make a huge difference too.

Gives your hands another position for longer rides AND they're a huge help on the uphill bits.

I have used them in the past (although now don't do the distance to warrant them), they are good for adding an extra hand position especially on long rides, just check you have enough room on your bar to get them on. Don't do the school boy trick of cutting your grips

I have and use the non carbon version of these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ritc ... -prod62148

They cost £5 or something second hand, and while they are considered uncool, I find the extra hand positions and leverage useful.
