So, beginning of the week I noticed a funny clicking sound on the bike, especially when putting a little extra effort in. Worse today and I managed to isolate it a little more- left hand side, noticable when putting in a big downstroke on the pedal. Can't see anything grossly abnormal but I think there is probably one of 3 spots that it could be coming from:
  • Pedal
  • Crank
  • BB.

Any ideas?

Nursed creaking bike home. Noise was present at the bottom of the pedal stroke and could be replicated by putting pressure on pedal whilst stationary with pedal at bottom of stroke position. No noise at the top of the stroke.

Pedals tightened, cranks tightened and still the noise occurred.

    Any ideas?

External BB? Is a cup loose?
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

It's on the list. I think the bike will have to have a bloody good going over on Saturday morning!

sounds like loose bottom bracket - try wiggling the crank left and right to feel any play in the BB.
if its a shimano hollowtech external one you can adjust it (assuming the bearings are not worn)

It was actually a knackered BB. Replaced it with the same for £10 and all was good.
