Bearing replacement on BB86

Couple of questions whilst I'm speccing up my new bike...

Frame I'm after is BB86, I'd like to use my Rotor 3D+ chainset. The only (?) way I can see this would work is with Rotor's 4130 pressfit bottom bracket (or the Enduro equivalent - if there are others then please let me know).

There's a clear limitation here in that to make room for the 30mm spindle I'm guessing the BB has small balls (!), which I would assume would reduce longevity somewhat.

I'm prepared to live with this provided that I can swap the ball bearings without having to push out and replace the cups every time. Is this the case or is the whole unit a replacable item?

Secondly everywhere seems to be out of stock of the Steel version but has the Ceramic ones. More expensive, but could I replace the ceramic balls with steel bearings when the time comes or are they seated differently?

Any ideas?

The 3D crank has a longer spindle to work with a regular 68mm threaded / BB86 press-fit and uses conventional size bearings so should present few reliability issues. Regular BB30 has a problem due to the shorter spindle. The bearings are simply press-fit, so easy to replace at a later date.

Monty, he's talking about the 30mm spindle version which doesn't fit a standard BB86, only the special 4130 bottom bracket.

The 4130 does definitely have fairly small bearings. I can't comment on real-world bearing lifespan though, I haven't tried it.

Cheers for the responses. It is the 30mm spindle version.

I think I'll give it a whirl with the ceramic bearings as they're available and not (very) silly money. It's for a TT bike so usage won't be mega-mileage or regularly in bad weather. If I'm running through bearings too quickly I'll think about a new crank.
  • Hi, just wanted to see if you successfully used the 4130 on the BB86??

I am in the process of putting my Rotor Power cranks. I've already pressed in the 4130 bearings, just need to take the cranks out of the other bike to swap over for the build up. It was easy, I spoke to Rotor who said just a bit of grease would be fine, but if I wanted I could use Loctite 641. If you use the Loctite, then they recommend using the activator 7649 (both are available from EuroCarParts)

If you want to get the ceramic cheaper, suggest looking here: http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;n ... 0618:10619

It's cheaper in € from Bike24 and then you have the current £:€ rate as well. Comes in about £73 inc shipping rather than what it costs here in the UK. Saving on the standard too, which are also in stock there, as I got mine this week :)

In reality you would probably have to press the cups out every time, but you could try to remove the bearings

Hi. I fit my pressfit 4130 ceramic into the shell, installed the rotor power crank using only the thin spacers and it seems to be smooth but the crank doesnt spin if you give it a push (on stand - no chain attached).

Did you find the same too? did you use the retention washer on the non-drive side or remove it completely?

Other question, I didnt see on the installation or BB any markings for non-driveside/driveside bearing so assume either way is ok...

appreciate a reply as im doing my nut in thinking ive done something wrong.. new BB in a new frame

    Thanks,
    Jay

    Jay,
See the bit I have highlighted in bold above. You say spacers. The guidance from Rotor is to remove spacers if it is not spinning/smooth. I only run one of the thin washers on my bike. Have you also checked that the preload nut is wound all the way back?

I am due to swap the cranks back to the road bike tonight, so will have a go at not putting on the chain to see how freely mine spins. FWIW when I installed 105 on my training bike, it didn't spin super freely

sorry to have taken so long to reply.

I only use the very thin plastic washers and my crank does not move at all if i give it a yank on the stand...

Ceramic speed are releasing a PF4130 which i will buy. Rotor have a really poor BB.
