Safety washers

Hi

Replacing my wheel i noticed two small pieces went out. Checking in the net those are called "safety washers"

What are those pieces for and how to install it in the wheel?

    'went out' means what exactly?

    Are these round washers with a hooked tab that goes into a hole at the dropouts? If so they reduce the chance of the wheel falling off slightly once the nuts are loose, personally I bin them anyway.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    No problem then if i dont install that piece?
