Hi All

Just looking at replacing my BB I have a crank puller but is to small, it goes straight through the hole in the BB, I have read you can get a pluging cap and also seen a you tube clip of a fella in America using a coin in side the BB to press the crank puller against, any one done this if so what sort of size coin am I looking at?

Also when it comes to tightening the collars that hold the BB in the frame is there a torque for them, or will this come in the info with the new BB?

    Coins bend and cause more issues than you need.

    Yes they need to be tight, Park tools lists the numbers if you have a tool that you can set. Of use a couple of grunts.

    Why do you need a crank puller? I've an octolink crankset and I seem to remember the cranks just comes off once the bolt has been removed.

    As for torque, you don't need a torque wrench for bottom brackets just apply a sensible amount of grunt, as Nick says.

    Thanks for the replies, not 100% sure about the puller just every where I read they all say to use a puller ( all very new to me this ) Just trying to get everything in place for when I do the job.

    When putting the cranks back on is on of the splines different ie one bigger/smaller for locating are you just putting the cranks opposite each other so you know they are in the right place.

    The axle is part of the drive side crank, you just pop the non-drive crank on 180 degrees round though I don't think there's any difference in the splines preventing you from locating it differently.

    They're not all self extracting. A couple of 5ps will probably do it, would want more than one though.

    That's Hollowtech 2, not Octalink. Octalink has 8 equal splines, and there's nothing on the splines to differentiate, you just line them up opposite each other.

    Thanks for the reply, did make me smile I bought a tool kit and thought to myself right I have got everything to look after my bike, first job and ****** ordered and plug tool.

    Is it possible to find out the length of the BB before taking it all apart, emailed Specialised no reply as yet, emailed a few companies and they said the spec will be on the old BB, just want to order a new one, pull it a part and put it back together.

    The bike is a Specialised Carve 29er 3x10 speed, on the Specialised specs it says it's 73mm but not the length.

    I'm almost positive you already know what version your bike has but don't some Carves come with press fit bottom brackets? I'm sure my mate was banging on about that the other day (although I have been known to be wrong once or twice :wink:)

    I have literally just had the cranks off my 2011 Camber which is sporting a Shimano BB-ES25 and I made 3 lovely little bowls for borrowers out of 5ps and a 1p before I stopped being a tight arse and bought the shimano plug for my standard crank puller :lol: thankfully no damage to the internal threads but I'm pretty sure that's more luck than judgement.

    Going to be fitting a Superstar bb mounted chain guide as soon as I get my bb tool through the post and this thread has answered a few questions I had so cheers for that :)

    The other measurement is just the axle width - once you've got the cranks off just measure it.

    All the specialized octalinks I have seen are 118. Most are 68mm but some 73mm, as this seems to be.

    If you get it from CRC http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod34653 and find its the wrong one then you have free returns, so no harm in taking a punt.

    Or if you want, you could order both sizes from wiggle: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-es25-oc ... 5360249421 and send back the one you dont need.

    It'll take 10 seconds with a tape measure, don't just blindly order things which may or may not be right.

    Was hoping to order the BB take it apart once and have it all sorted, a friend of mine was telling me can tighten the collars a bit more to take up some of the play, I have a ride planned with my son on Sunday is it best not to use the bike with a bit of play in the BB ??

    He's wrong, there's nothing you can do, it's a sealed unit, in fact the RH cup is actually just the BB itself. There were some adjustable Shimano BBs years ago, I had a Dura Ace one, lasted forever, but was a pain.

    Measure with the vernier with the cranks off, too much faff with them on.

    You won't do any damage riding it whilst it's got some play.

    As above he is wrong.

    If you look up the crank part number of tell us what the part number is we could tell you what length you need.

    Hi All

    Thanks for the replies, went for a early ride this morning and plucked up courage to pop the BB out the info on it is 73mmx113mm with a little jk by it, Shimano bb-ES25, BC 1.37 x 2.1.

    I take it the BB 51 ockalink BB will be better quality as long as I order the 73x113 BB51 I take it they will be the same thing ??

    Yes, the 51 is supposed to be better - I am not convinced that there is much in it - I think the main difference is that the end piece of the 25 is plastic whereas on the 51 its metal.

    I fitted an ES-51 BB to a mates frame thursday to replace the worn out ES-25 and it came with a plastic left hand cup. Dont think they have come with a metal one for a while, luckily I never throw anything out and found a metal one in my spares box.
