Bar end shifter re-assembly help!

I've managed to dismantle the rear derailleur bar end shifter when I took it off to shorten the bars (shimano sl bs79). I can get it all back together apart from a thin black tabbed washer - can't see where it goes or which way round. Shimano techdocs seems to be offline and pics I can find don't show this washer.
Can anyone help please?

vaguely remember doing this.have you tried fitting the washer on the outside of the lever between the lever and the final 'end cap' fitting ,which has the BL BS79 writing on it?
