So many different views on shortening brake hose

Hi all,
my new deore brakes turned up today, and I have been searching around for shortening the hose, there are so many different people saying different things, is there a definitive way of doing it?
do you have to remove pads?
do you have to keep lever depressed?
Or can it be as simple as, undo nut, measure and cut (lever end), insert the insert, new olive and tighten it back up?
I have a bleed kit on its way from Epic Bleed Solutions just in case lol
Thanks for your ever ongoing help

Pull back the rubber cover on the lever end, undo the nut, pull out hose... carefully, try and hold it up or put your finger over the end so you don't lose too much fluid (you will spill a little bit but that's ok), cut hose (again try not to lose too much juice), put the bits that were on the end you pulled out back on to your freshly cut end, put back in lever, tighten nut, replace rubber cover.
I have done it to two sets and it really wasn't hard.0 -
So have you read the instructions that came with the brakes?
Do you have a bleed kit?
If no then read Shimanos way of shortening the hoses which may not need a bled kit.
But most people still need a bleed kit.
Why would you need to compress the lever at all? Sounds like you have been watching too much carp on YouTube."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

As with cars, do you need to make sure you keep the fluid well away from the frame? IIRC, I had a few moments with car brake fluid stripping paint quicker than anything ...0

Shimano (and some other brand) brakes use mineral oil, which isn't nearly as damaging or unpleasant as the brake fluid (DOT etc.) used in cars. Some mtb brakes do use DOT fluid though, e.g. Hopes.0

I guess FF doesn't understand what e.g. means...or or shall we all play the listing game...Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Why not? He was merely supplementing MMs offering of Hope, seems a useful contribution for anyone who may be wondering if they need to protect their frame whilst sorting their Avid brakes!
FWIW Magura use mineral oil. Hayes and Formula use DOT fluid.0 -
Tektro use DOT as do Clarkes (aka Quad, aka Vuelta) as well then.....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
