over these http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-road-gear-cable-set-stainless-54000.html everyone who i know that has 9000 raves about it, is some of the smoothness down to these 'new' cables?

Them cables are the greatest things ever made. So, most definitely, yes.

No point having a decent group set and then linking it with sub standard cables as it won't shift as cleanly. It's not like you have to replace them every month.
