Looks like John's Bikes in Bath may have gone pop :(

If so it's a tragic loss, I've been going there since 1980. John Potter started Johns Bikes and also started the London to Brighton rides.

As I'm not from Bath and have never purchased anything from that shop, the news has little to no impact at all to my life.

I do thank you for posting that link though. If I meet anyone from Bath in the next few months, I'll be able to chat to them quite knowledgeably about the demise of the LBS know as John's Bikes, who knows, maybe they'll be impressed!

My LBS closed in the early 80's, Pembertons - a stunning cycling shop (and toy shop), in Sale, just over the border with Altrincham, there is something on the internet about his bikes, Pemberton Flyer, but I can't be bothered looking right now. The premises now sell curtains I think. Shame.

There you go, now you can have a similar conversation should you meet anyone from South Manchester who is of a certain age.

Internet = Public Service all day long!

Sorry mate, you didn't need to read it. It's just that as the founder of the London to Brighton which has now had over half a million participants in it's 30 odd year existence there seemed to be a fair chance that a few members of this forum benefitted from John Potters vision and enthusiasm.

That would make me think twice about posting on a subject local to me...unless I lived in London of course.
  • Does anyone know for sure if the shop will not be reopening?

Unfortunately this is just the same as all those RIP threads, unless the individual was personally known to you what do you really expect people's reaction to be

It's very admirable that this person started the London to Brighton but surely the credit for so many people participating is now due largely to the involvement of an organisation as huge as the British Heart Foundation?

    I blame the internet.

Look what it's done... Johnny's shops shut. and there's porn everywhere you look. and yet you can't pinch a bottom through fear of....

    anyway I digress.

    Too upset really.

@theory900 - i'm sorry your thread has been hijacked by bell-ends. Perfectly legitimate post and quite right that there's a large contigent here from the S.W. who will know this shop well. Those that don't can feel free to walk on by without sharing their 'humour'. I can't see any news on if/when the shop will re-open but I'll be keeping a close eye on this.

Whenever I've been in therer I've seen more staff than customers, with a big retail unit and bit of a mish mash of items for sale (in contrast to the Specialized store just up the road).

I'd guess the shop isn't making money (or enough money) and he's taken the option of selling the lease onto another retailer/cafe whatever, got out whilst he could.

Bath has quite a few decent bike shop's, John's Bikes is (was) below average in my opinion.

For those who are at all interested in the actual thread topic - bit more news here:

    http://www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/news/11078003.Brakes_go_on_for_Bradford_mayor___s_bike_business

The shop had a good range across all bike styles, and a big workshop. For the many people who need advice and someone else to do their maintenance it's a loss.
