10sp cassette on 11sp freehub

I have just had built up some Campag Record hubs with a Shimano 11sp freehub fitted. It comes with a spacer and the instruction is to use this if i intend to use a 10sp cassette(which I will). Do I still need to fit the spacer that comes with the cassette, i.e. 2x spacers?

What wheels are they?0

Fit it without, see if it tightens up, if not then fit the second spacer. I think you usually do need 2 though.0

Handbuilts from a local builder, Ryde Pulse Sprint rims, Sapim race spokes and the Records hubs. Can't wait to get out on them!Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Thanks, was going to be my approach if no definite answer from here. I suppose if it shifts well without reindexing I must have got it right.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

As above, try 2 spacers, but if the last sprocket doesn't go on, then use the 1.85 mm one only... or try the 1.85 only and if you can't lock it, then put bothleft the forum March 20230

Yes, that's right. 10 speed cassettes need a spacer on 8/9/10 speed hubs (unless it's a Tiagra cassette). So you need one cassette to make it fit 10 speed and a second spacer because your 11th sprocket is missing. HTH0 -

Definitely need the two spacers thanks for the advice. One weird thing though, I fitted a brand new Ultegra 11-25 cassette but couldn't get it to run in top gear without the chain jumping up and skipping. Fitted a 12-25(new) and it ran fine?!Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

You didn't by any chance use the 12T lockring with the 11T cassette?
11T cassettes use a smaller lockring. A 12T lockring will stop the chain fully engaging an 11T sprocket.0 -

Yes used my bling gold anodised Token lockring on it. When I then fitted the 11-25 on my TT bike I used the supplied 11t locking and it ran fine. Serve me right for being so vain. :oops:Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

For some reason it's always easier to work out what's wrong with somebody else's bike than my own.
If you could tell me why my 105 rear downshifts are making a noise like a squashed frog I'd be most grateful. I'm seriously considering recabling the whole thing.0 -
How do you find those Ryde rims - thinking of a similar build?0

So far they have been superb. Laterally they are very stiff. I set the brakes with less than 1mm clearance just to see if there was any flex/rub but there has been nothing. The ride quality is very good, not sure if it's down to the rims as I'm using 25mm Open Corsa's which are a lovely tyre. The wheels seem to float over rough broken roads. The builder reckons they are some of the best wheels he has built recently and is doing a similar build for himself. Not cheap at £80 a rim but I think they are worth it.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Ta. Was it cycle clinic down in Suffolk? I'm planning on getting a set of those rims but undecided on the hubs and what to do about a second training wheelset.0

No it was Phil Hargreaves from Norwich Wheel Systems, my Record hubs are fab but obviously bumps up the price. My build came in at £399Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

DKay wrote:Ummmm...bent rear hanger/rear mech cage?
The mech and it's hanger are perfectly vertical and the gear changes themselves are crisp and accurate. I suspect the noise is in some way cable related. I'm going to try a strip and relube of the cables, and if that fails I'll replace the lot. The outers are still the originals the bike came with over 6 years ago so they owe me nothing...0 -

Just ordered the same - how are you finding them?0 -

Yes Phil told me you had ordered some. I find them great, they ride over rough broken roads with ease but are super stiff laterally. I deliberately set the brakes very close to the rims to see if I could get any brake rub but there hasn't been a squeak. I'm using 25mm Vittoria Corsa Evos on mine so not sure how much they are contributing so might try some other tyres from my collection to see how they go. Initially I was worried about the weight of the build (1601gr) but needn't, Phil's assurance that the super light rims would still spin up quick was spot on. I'm sure you'll love yours.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?
