Ok, im sure this is as nearly as big a debate as 26, 650B or 29er but which do you prefer. Looking at the higher end of the ranges but not 1x yet (the wife needs a bit more convincing). :D

I have Shimano XT and SRAM X0. There's not really much in it but the SRAM kit was a lot more expensive.
I have had SRAM X9 as well which was closer to XT in terms of price but it just wasn't as good and didn't last well.

At the mid level (Deore/X5) there is little to choose between them, likewaise at the top level, but around the SLX(X7) and XT(X9) level I think Shimano is better, the lower return spring pressure on the SRAM mechs causes more issues when mud/muck gets in the way as well. That said the X0 gripshift with X9 rear mech on my commuter has now done about 3500 trouble free miles!

I don't think there's much in it at all. I'd go by the best deal you get.

If I was buying i would go for shimano, I've had X5/X7/X9 on most of the bikes I have purchased new and would pick deore or SLX over any of it. Even the Alivio stuff on my Voodoo is great.

Either will be fine on a bike with a basket!

Just to add, as it's not clear from your post, for brakes it is 100% Shimano the whole way.......

I was always a Shimano fan(having only used up to XT), then I got a bike with X0 and loved it but having just bought some XTR shifters I'm leaning towards Shimano when it comes to a favourite

I lean towards shimano. However, I also had X9 on my old bike and it was excellent. I don't buy into the 'X9 is no better than low level Shimano' type comments you often get on here.

If it makes a difference, rear wheels are easier to remove with SRAM derailleurs due to the way the pivots work, but you shouldn't pick on that

Just cut the faff and buy X01, 1x11 lovliness, really light and plenty cheap.

    Sounds too complex.

    Single speed.

    OP

A bit of this and a bit of that. Whatever shift system is preferred. But Shimano cassettes and SRAM chains.

Shimano all the way. Sram stuff just doesn't seem to last these days and feels completely un-refined compared to Shimano. The cassettes are far better as well, the Sram 1030 cassette I had was one of the biggest lumps of shite I've put on my bike, took it off and replaced with a deore cassette and it was 10 times better. Xt is great value for money, XTR is a smidge better but unless you're feeling super flush Xt is better value.

Well, after all that i went for SRAM X7 type 2 10s mech, X7 shifters, 1050 cassette and 1051 chain.

All went together well and first test ride was great until i nearl went over the bars when the chain slipped around the chainset!!
As my pockets were not that full i bought a SRAM chainset for £30 to get me out of a hole and to be honest it all works brilliantly. Snappy, clean shifts that i never had when the bike was new :D:D

My trusty stead is only a Carrera Banshee 2011 but has seen me get back into MTBing, lose 3 stone and love it again. In the last year we have been to Glentress!! my first trail centre experience and did i crap myself! Loved it though. Cannock chase 3 times, Swinley 2x, The Gap ride at Breacon, Sherwood pines, Forest of Dean and a few routes from the magazines.
  • I'm in the middle of this too. Old bike wears XT gear and new carerra fury is X5 but I just cannot get on with the shifters.... I was thinking of sticking with sram but the more I look the more undecided I get
  • Having used both, I'm firmly in the Shimano camp. Currently using mainly XT on my 26er (best wheel size).
