Dura-ace or 105?

Seems like an odd question, so let me explain.

In the not too distant future I'm going to be starting a winter build/rain build (for use next winter); I don't have a winter bike at the mo so my good bike is getting a little trashed.

My Look has currently got Ultegra 6700 on it and this is where my question comes in. Do I pick up a 5700 105 group for £300 and use that on the winter/rain bike, or do I treat the Look to some shiny 9000 Dura-ace and drop the 6700 onto the winter/rain bike?

One option is sensible and cheaper, the other flashy and expensive......decisions decisions

9000 probably means 11 speed - what would this mean for your wheels? Could be more expensive than you first imagine!!

I would go for the 11 speed on your best bike so it would be either 9000 or 6800 and new wheels if you need them :D

I see that as the sensible (albeit more expensive) option.
Its not at all flashy if you go for the 6800.

Putting brand new kit on your wet bike and having worn stuff on your best seems silly to me.
One of the good things about having two+ bikes is that it justifies such upgrades to your best bike.

The fact that you are considering DA makes 6800 a no brainer IMO

Common sense says I recommend you run Tiagra on your winter bike and 105 on summer bike. Probably all you'll need.

Then again, if money's no object, 6800 is supposed to be excellent and superior in every way to 6700. If I was getting a new bike or groupset (for anything other than commuting )it is definitely the one I would choose.

So buy 2 new groupsets and bin the useable 6700 when you could spend the same amount and have 11 speed on best bike and no silly cables or hood indicator windows on the other one.

    That makes perfect sense
  • Entirely depends on what you want to spend? Buying 105 would be £300 only and that's the end of that. Whereas getting Dura Ace would be around £1,000, some difference.

Depends if you want an upgrade from 6700?
Perhaps upgrade that to 6800 and put 6700 on the winter bike, but you get what you pay for :)

Personally I would leave my summer bike alone and buy Tiagra for the winter bike, but that's just from a cost saving point of view.
  • Di2 6870 or 9070 on the look and put the 6700 on the winter bike, when the 6700 chain and cassette wear replace with cheaper steel cassette and chain.

Downgrade the Ultegra and get the best set you can afford for the best bike.

I ditched 7900 Dura-ace and replaced it with 6800 which turned out to be a good move because the shift quality is better. I looked at getting 9000 but I struggled to justify the cost, you're paying twice the price for what.......few grams? I'd guess that most of the weight is lost in the chainset and I use a SRAM red chainset anyway.
I spent the extra money on a set of wheels.

I would have to agree with the majority, put the ultegra on the winter bike (would make for a really nicely specced bike that wouldn't be a chore to ride).
  • Cheers for the input everyone. I think I just needed that push to confirm the flashy option was the way to go. I've heard a lot about the new 11 speed Shimano stuff being the nuts so 9000 it is.

Electronic isn't a very neat option for me with it being an externally cabled frame so Di2 will wait for a while and I fancied 9000 over 6800 just well......because its Dura-ace. I'm sure thats a legit enough reason? I know there isn't a huge difference but you only live once.
  • Good choice, da is massively slicker than ultegra.
  • Go with what your heart says...so the DA i imagine?
  • Go dura ace 9000, I've just done it and it blows ultegra out of the park in my opinion. I was expecting there to maybe be a tiny amount of difference but there's not, they are worlds apart. Sorry bug I don't care what anyone says, one if the best component choices I've ever made.

    that's a fair point.

Though tbh my comments were not really aimed at the OP. More at the cycling public in general.

Nice to know I won't be disappointed :D

Good job really though seen as I'll need to sell organs to buy everything :P
