  • Looks terrible, like a Mountain bike that didn't quite work

PS: for gravel bikes you do need gravel... there is a lot of gravel in North America where these things are popular, I remember miles of gravel roads in the rocky mountains around the Kootenay river, where you can unleash your bike and dodge Grizzly bears gorging on dandilyons at the side of the road... I have never seen a gravel road longer than 300 yards in the UK to be honest

That's probably why I like it, a proper bike

Ugo, I have about 15 miles of 'gravel' roads a mile from my doorstep - it's called Aldershot Ranges. Been riding them for 25 years and but didn't realise I needed a new 'genre' of bike to ride them :?
If you want to go fast on loose stones, then the fatter tyres the better IME. I run 38mm Smart Sams tubeless on my CX bike for summer duties - means I can go tearing it up on the MTB trails and singletrack too.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

All of the access tracks in the forestry in north wales are gravel, must be a fair few miles of them but they don't go on for very long distances in any direction they just criss cross the forests.

CX bikes are race bikes, Gravel bikes are not?

Basically there isn't one. It's a marketing thing. Although as above, CX sometimes means more race oriented.

Bit of a thread resurrection here but what would there be any disadvantage of using a bike like the revolt as a cross race bike? (Apart from people don't like the look of it) What difference would the geometry make in terms of a twisty CX course? Looking in to this for a mate who can get one on cycle to work and as far as I can see it ticks a lot of boxes, big tyre clearance for trail/adventure riding (50mm) can run CX tyres and also could run a fat road tyre making it useful for a commute. It's better specced than the equivelant Specialized in my opinion and can run a much larger tyre.
