Looking at some new 26" wheels and found what look like bargains on superstars website. Are they bargains?
A friend of a friend took some new superstar wheels out at dalby last week and the front bearing collapsed, is this a one off or not??
I'm looking at these
http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=826
Or these
http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=798
Which would you go for or are there better value wheel sets out there?
Thanks
Chris

Both are good. I have had three sets of Superstar wheels and all have been good.
The ones you have linked are good xc wheels but they might be a bit narrow for some tyres.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
I've also been looking into superstar wheels, research so far is that the bearings are a weak point... either they are pants bearings or the seals are junk. Found one or two cases of wheels going badly out of true very quickly as well.
The bearing factor isn't too much of a concern for me providing they are a standard size, crappy seals I would think twice about.... Wheels coming out of true could happen to any brand.
The plus side is that they are uk based and you'll get support, which is apparently good...I would take a gamble.0 -
I'd get them but get the build checked before you ride them. Mine de-tensioned completely on my first proper ride on them. I've heard a few people have similar happen. I'd buy them again, but budget £15 for the LBS (assuming you can't do it yourself).0

I generally do dalby red or going to try some in the peaks and I use 2" - 2.2" tyres so will these be too narrow? How do you tell?0 -
Depends on the tyre. For my Continental 2.2" Rubber Queens they would be a bit narrow. For a narrower 2.2" (tyre inches vary a lot!) they will be fine.
The bearings are sealed, cartridge type so there is no separate seals. Mine lasted a year before I replaced them.
Superstar sell a lot of wheels and people are much more likely to post comments on the Internet when they have a problem.
I would certainly buy another set.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Do you think it might be a bad idea to try these if they're narrow will they be up to trail centre routes like dalby red and the peaks?0

Maybe an all mountain rim would be a good idea. Something like a Mavic XM719 or the all mountain version of the XCX

they are selling their carbon AM wheels with switch hubs for £399 at the moment0

Or you could get some from proper wheel builders from the likes of Justridingalong. They are not thrown together like Superstar.

Had my superstar wheels for over 6 months now, still straight and true from day one and they get some stick. Had no problems with bearings either. They are flow rims on switch hubs. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones.
Superstar do offer a free wheel re-tune if you do have problems thoughCommencal Ramones Cromo 13 - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=129269380 -

For £200 or less I really don't think you can do better than Superstar.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
