Hey all, my 6 year old son is coming out riding with me more and more and all he has is a single speed, BMX style bike (poor quality halfords job) and it's just not good enough.

So any of you have bikes for your youngsters, looked at giant xtc jr, and spesh hotrock, both 20 inch wheels, wondered if any of you have other suggestions

Thanks

I've got my little one on one of these...

That's the '13 version and I think it's been updated for '14, though I think it might be just cosmetic. It's a really good bike and she's had some great riding out of it over the last two years and we should get another summer out of it. And, after a lot of offloading, it still looks like new so we should get a decent price for it when it's time to sell.
All the gear, no idea and loving the smell of jealousy in the morning.

Thanks, I would be interested to know what the minimum seat height is on that, just so that I could compare it to his current bike, if you could measure that would be brilliant. Thanks for your help if you can :)

23.5" minimum seat height and 22" stand over below the nose of the saddle.

Here's a vid of her riding it some time back. She was still riding with the saddle low for confidence so she's siting quite low in the bike in the vid (she's up to correct seat height now) and, before anyone points it out, it was filmed on the week she was between helmets...

  • Hmm, looks quite big, my boy is still a bit small for that it would seem, will measure him tomorrow anyway, wonder if a HT may be better for him, as they tend to sit a little lower, possibly

  • My daughter is 6 and currently riding one of these:

She loves it although I'm thinking of swapping the forks for rigid to save weight. She's dying to come to Whinlatter with me to try it out properly, just waiting for the weather to get better.

Thanks, can't see any measurements on that site either, surely that's a pretty important thing for kids bikes?

Looks good for the money too, £220 for the rigid fork model

  • Measurements on kids bikes seem to be quite vague. Luckily for my daughter she had the chance to try it before buying. Can you get your skin to a local bike shop to try a few out?

  • My most local one stocks giant and Spesh, so may hopefully have something in, otherwise it's an hours drive to the next place that may have something

  • Any chance of measuring the minimum seat height on the Merida?

    Thanks
