Pistons need pushing back, either very carefully with a flat head screwdriver or preferably with the bleed block that hopefully came with the brakes
  • Brakes came on bike so nothing came with them :(

If the bike was new, then it would have been between the pads when you took it out of the box, my giant from Pauls cycles came with a black one, it's a piece of plastic

  • Mine came from Paul's but they built it for me as I'm local .. . Not far from you mate :)

    I'm sure I've got some plastic somewhere so . . .

Wheel out plastic between pads and lever them back each side

Wheel in and pump lever ?

Twist screwdriver between pads like a key works better, or plastic without pads in

This is what I did after doing similar and they worked fine afterwards.
