Road bike derailleur on mtb?

Many years ago before I had my forced break from biking in 2008 my LBS recommended me to put a road bike derailleur on my hardtail street/jumping bike. I can't remember exactly why, perhaps the short cage and snappy shifting. One thing I do remember though is that it was brilliant and the short cage had less of a risk of getting caught on stuff.
Basically now I need all new stuff for my 24 Le Toy 3 I'm building up and is this idea with the road bike derailleur still a good idea or are there good short cgae MTB derailleurs out there? I need a new shifter, derailleur, cassette, single chainring for the front, chain, cranks and cables and the bike should be ready to go at the moment it's just a rolling frame and I need everything to actually pedal the bike. I want it to be all heavy duty, I'm not bothered about weight otherwise I wouldn't be building up a 24 Le Toy 3 lol.

A lot of people seem to be fitting Shimano Zee deraillers they are nice and short and well tucked away.

cheers. It does seem very small and tucked away. Just what I'm after because the bike it's going on will be getting a good punishing lol0

A lot of DH racers use road mechs because they're cheap, functional and have a short cage.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

Cheers. I'll go ahead on order a Zee one. In the middle of making a shopping list for the rest of the parts now and the price isn't looking good lol, every little adds up and I even have to get all new cables and tubes.0

Make sure you order the right one there is 2 styles a close ratio for a road cassette and wide ratio for a MTB cassetteFig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0
