I was reading an engineering trade publication at my desk this morning and I came across this article about a retro-fit motorised rear wheel for road and commuter bikes.

It uses a motor inside the rear hub to assist with pedaling, but also uses GPS to self-adjust the amount of assistance required depending upon the topography.
It might be a gimmick that we never hear of again, but if it gets people out on their bikes a bit more then it cannot be a totally bad thing.
