Swapping triple for compact

A bike I'm looking to by has a 105 triple currently, but I'd want it to have a double/compact.
How easy would this be to do, and would I need any more than a new chainset?
Many thanks.

  • Hello,

You will need a new front mech specific for the chain you plan to use (9 or 10 or 11 speed). You might well be ok to continue with your existing front shifter but you do not say what type it is, I am assuming it is a STI. The limit screws on the front mech will restrict the shifter to work in only two positions for the new crankset, once set up. You then might look at the rear cassette. If traveling up the odd alp then an 11-28 might be good assuming your rear mech will cope with that, and most will. And if you change the cassette then change the chain for a new one.

You only need to change the chain if it's worn, not because you're swapping a cassette out.

If its any comfort, I've just changed a double to triple on my dad's bike and I'm a mechanical buffoon.

    Bits needed for my job:

    1. Sora Triple chainset + BB to suit + triple front mech + Long cage Rear Mech (£30 off the classifieds)

    2. Old BB Tool - (£10 LBS)

    3. Crankpuller - (£12.50 LBS)

    4. New BB Tool - (£4 ebay)

    5. Triple shifter - (Swapped for my double shifter on the classifieds £3 postage)

    6. New Cables All Round - (£23 ebay)

    7. Bar Tape - (£6 - ebay)

    8. New bars (not needed but wanted compact drop - £26 LBS)

    9. New chain and cassette (£25 ish ebay)

DONE!...If I can do it, anyone can do it

You don't need to replace all of those things though!

    Correct

Cables, bar-tape, bars, cassette and chain were required for other reasons, some more justifiable than others :-)

Rear mech and (probably) new bottom bracket not needed either!

    Wrong!

How TF do you think you can tell that from behind a keyboard??

I'm not saying you didn't need it (presumably the mech was required for the new, bigger cassette). What I mean is that the OP doesn't need to change the rear mech in order to go from a triple chainset to a compact. If they're going to be using the same model chainset, they won't need a new BB either.
