Hi

I have noticed the free hub being really noisy on the past couple of rides. I have these wheels:

However I can't fathom how to remove the free hub. I have watched youtube vids about needing cone spanners, but there doesn't seem to be a locknut on top for a spanner to grab. This is the closest vid I can find, but allen keys don't work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9p2tlT-XYrg

If anyone could tell me what I am missing that would be great as hopefully just needs re-greasing, I have attached some pics to help show what I mean:

Cheers,
Ant

Looking at the exploded diagram it looks like there's flats for a cone spanner on that knurled lock nut on the non drive side. Drive side presumably the same?

Thanks mate you were right and that diagram made things much clearer, thanks for posting that :). Nothing like the right tool for the job and picked up some cone spanners from Halfords.

Here is the problem, will try pick up some new bearings later.

Sh1t! You been riding round the Somerset Levels??

I usually get the genuine Shimano bearings from SJS. I'm guessing you might not want to wait for an online order though since it's finally stopped raining and you might want to ride your bike?

I live in Wales so I can count on my one hand the amount of dry days we have had this year. Guess two winters haven't done them any favours, ashamed I haven't carried out any maintenance on them before now.
  • I have a set of RS80 on one of my bikes and the back wheels is noisy, I guess it will be the same as yours when I get around to working on it. They are 18 months old and never been touched.

I was surprised how bad they were, but only noticed the noise this week after two hard winters and they must have 8000 miles + on them, so pretty good considering. Just over ten quid later anyway on the spanners and new bearings and they will hopefully give me another few thousand quieter miles.
