My mate wants a new bike but he is only use to riding 26 ~£400 Carrera so far but his ability is far in excess of his previous budget, entering races on it and coming mid field.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a place he can try a few bikes as he is unsure if to get a 29er or 650b and if to get an FS or HT because he wants a race bike but also a trail bike but ideally he needs to make up his own mind.

Thanks for the help!

  • Could try stif. North Yorkshire. They often do open days with loads of bikes to test, they are really helpful as well. Failing that, its quite a bit further but llangdegla in Wrexham have quite a few demo dikes.

Why not upgrade the Carrera? Using nearly new/good used parts it can be quite cost effective.

See link in sig to mine, the older Carrera frame is pretty light and will take 650B wheels/tyres.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Talk to local bike shops to see if they can get a demo bike in from the distributor and search for demo days and events.

Larger trail centres will also have better and more expensive hire bikes. Eg at Afan you hire out some tasty looking Santa Cruz bikes.
