Hi - How "bullet proof" are these? I have been looking at single speeds as I am tired of replacing drivetrains every year (my commute is along the beachfront) and then saw these. I want something that can withstand cycling across a sandy promenade and not fall apart. Any advice greatly received ! Thanks.

I have one on my Charge Plug 3. I have covered about 250 miles in all conditions but mostly on the roads and so far all has been good. The gearing shifts smoothly although for my hilly route I think I need a slightly larger cog on the back. I bought the Charge for the same reasons you have given but I dont think they make them anymore. If you shop around you might find one in a sale. Has mudguard mounting points but strangely no bottle holder mounts.

I* was bought a sturmey-archer 3 speed raleigh in 1970 second hand. I commuted in london for 6years and used it for fun the rest of the time and it got stolen in 1983. In that time the only time the hub caused any problem was when I , as a teenager, decided to clean the insides: I had to take it to the lbs and ask him to fix it.embarrassing. if the shimanos are anything like as tough they are what you want. However I remember someone on a forum saying that the shimanos are supposed to be opened annually for clean and lube by a mechanic( maybe not true). That would be a nuisance. The s-a had a hole in it ,with a spring cover, through which you squirted 3in 1 or wd40 frequently.
