New laws to protect cyclists in Portugal mean that car drivers HAVE to leave 1.5 meters of space when overtaking cyclists.

cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast, cyclists are no longer required to ride right on the edge of roads as they also have to allow 1.5 meters when overtaking parked cars, and I presume moving ones!

We are gonna need wider roads :D
my isetta is a 300cc bike

i remember a few years back on the n270 going west from loule, there's a cement works (i think) with huge dumper trucks going in/out somewhere off to the left

i'd stopped to tweak the rd, was standing on the edge of the road behind the white line, a truck ahead had stopped to turn left

suddenly WHAMMMMM a truck shot past me by a few cm, then clipped the side of the one ahead before coming to a halt, clearly he'd planned on undertaking the stopped one and was doing it right on the edge of the road before he saw me and veered back

he looked out to see if i was ok, we nodded to each other

at the time i didn't think how close i came to being splattered, later on i felt queasy

    1.5m would be much better
