silly question

if i have 10 gear rear mech would i be able to use a 8 gear sprocket on the rear hub, and a 8 gear shifter. does the 10 gear mech mean thats the maximum it can be used on

    It depends on what shifters and mechs they are. Post a list of the items and you may well get a definitive answer. For instance, a 9 speed shimano mech will work with 8 speed shifters but a 10 speed MTB mech will not. If is is a road mech then it might.

    If Shimano road mech and shifter then yes, but not 10 speed MTB mech as they have different actuation ratios.
    If it's a SRAM road mech, then no again as they have different cable actuation ratios.
    If Campagnolo, probably.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
