I am having an issue with my cassete, I bought a pair of RS80 wheels 50mm 8-10speed compatible, I have managed to put on 9 of the 10 gears onto the hub, however the last 11 teeth is not going on, I have tried twisting it every way to wiggle it on but no joy, the 9 have gone onto to it perfectly, I dont undestand why it wont go on, I tried for about 20mins, The cassette is shimano 11-25teeth 10speed these are the exact set I bought http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/WPSHOEMRS8 ... r-wheelset
and below is the 10speed cassette http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/e ... -prod50454
Any help is appreciated.

  • Is there a spacer on the freehub body preventing the last cog.

Do you have a spacer on the freehub before the largest sprocket? Should only be a thin metal one for a 10 speed cassette on a shimano 8/9/10 speed freehub. Often overlooked when swapping cassettes because it's stuck in a recess in the back of the largest sprocket.

Is it a metal circular part? I also have 3 black spacers I assumed were to just protect the separate parts from scratching in he packaging?

:?: But that would make it loose not tight (if you are suggesting it is not there, reads very confusing to me)

The only way it will be tight is if he has too many spacers or too thick a spacer.

Badly written; I was wondering if he'd got 2 of the 10 speed spacers on there somehow.

Spacer we are talking about is metal and circular yes. It fits onto the freehub before any of the cassette parts.

The black ones you talk about may be the plastic spacers required between certain individual cogs (do they have 10s written on them?) as some have captive spacers but others do not.

You need to have equal gaps between each cog.

Here is the exploded diagram showing the correct order for the separate bits. Your 11t version is the top diagram. Part 13 is the thin metal spacer and parts 12 are the 3 black plastic spacers you mention. If you've missed them out start again. Once installed all the sprockets should be the same distance apart.

Doh! Smidsy beat me to it!

Is it possible he has got the 12 or 13 tooth cog (or both?) the wrong way round. They are profiled to fit into one another and would add to the width considerably if the were reversed when assembled?

Just a thought as the OP seems to have had problems with identifying that the "black plastic spacers" are an integral part of the assembly and not there as packing materials.

You can't say that and not tell us. As in 5 years time someone will be googling "Can't get cassette on RS80" and end up here.

probably didn't have the spacer on before the cassette and the 11 tooth sprocket will only go on the cassette body so far...

that wouldn't make sense though, would it?
If he missed the spacer off, the 11 sprocket would then sit too far in on the freehub body. He would have no trouble getting it to fit onto the splines of the freehub , just that the lockring wouldn't then seat against it.

More likely he has used one TOO MANY spacers as alluded to already.

it would, as 11T sprockets will only go onto the freehub body about 1 to 2mm, if you had a bare freehub and an 11T it won't go any further than that - try it

I see your point there and that would kind of make sense.
But he's saying he can't get the 11t sprocket on at all so can't be certain what his problem is.

But that was not the OP's problem - he stated he could not get it to go on at all.
