Hi,
I'm stuck between the M640 ZEE (wide ratio) and the XT786 Shadow+ GS for putting on to my XC hardtail and I would like to know if anyone has real world knowledge of the better option for my application?
I ride mainly tame trails; woods, fields (the odd concrete staircase) etc and I'm racing the Thetford winter series, planning to do a few of the MSG rounds. This bike won't get much rougher than that hence I want to ditch off the two rings that I never use and simplify the drivetrain.
The price and weight difference is negligible so that isn't an issue and I think I've grasped all the benefits and limitations of the smaller cage of the ZEE. I use an XT SL M780 shifter and I'm planning to use a raceface narrowwide on the M780 cranks, not sure which size yet, and would happily take advice/recommendations on an alternative that wouldn't need me to use a chain device of some kind.
Should I just be flipping a coin?
Thanks.

For an XC bike go for the XT. It's lighter and has better quality jockey wheels. I'm using a Zee on my AM and DH bikes but they both have XT jockey wheels from the old XT mechs.
The Raceface rings are good. There are cheaper alternatives from Work's etc. They all seem to work pretty much the same so just go for which one is cheapest or you like the colour of best (I use the Raceface because it was the only red one available at the time). The size of the ring can really only be decided by you. I use 32t with an 11-36t cassette on my XC bikes just so I've got that easier gear when I'm tired.0 -
Hi Peter,
This is perfect thanks, exactly the insight I was after. I knew there would be some difference that I had overlooked on the XT and at the moment you can get it for £43 on Pedalon (surely a mistake).
Was looking for advice on manufacturer rather than size for the front ring and it seems that Raceface is the winner. I will be running a 32t up front until I need to replace the 11-34 cassette, at which point I'll consider other combinations, eg 34t and 11-36.
1x10 for £85 quid (plus chainring bolts) and I now have a spare XT RD, XT FD and XT Front Shifter. Now if only the trails weren't 4 inches underwater...
Thanks again0 -
I have Zee mechs on both XC and AM FS, as the short cage just keeps the mech out of trouble.0
