Scotland to Bulgaria route advice?

Three of us plan to cycle from Scotland to Bulgaria this year (2014). I wonder if anyone can advise on routes, cheap accommodation and so on. We would be leaving from Edinburgh area, and plan to get to Sofia. I live in Bulgaria, so can take the route home from Sofia - it's the rest that I am hoping to get info on (oh, ferry crossings, too). Unless you know a website or a book that would help?

    We did this on the club ride the other day. Head south, get to Dover and use a ferry (the channel looks like a Somerset puddle but isn't). Once in snail eating territory turn slightly left and then straight on. Should be there in a jiffy. Mind the Auto Bahn's though as I think you can ride on them on a TT bike with a skin suit on.
