I've measured my sit bones at 100mm which according to one chart puts me on the top end of a 130mm saddle or the lower end of a 143mm one. How important is it to get the correct width saddle?

Very  too wide and you will get rubbing in all the wrong places, 130 IMO others may have differing views.

You really have to try both as it depends on your build.

Have a read of this, it gives the best explanation I've seen about saddles

  • Thanks for replies. I think I'll go for a 130mm saddle after reading the cervelo four and a half rules.

    Good article, thanks for posting.

I am currently doing my own saddle research.
No shop nearby has any trial saddles so I am just buying loads and testing them.
A big ebay sale is on the cards when I have decided.
Working through the Spesh and SMP ranges at the mo.
  • I am also trying different saddles after having surgery for prostate cancer. Currently using a SMP 209 Lite and a Fizik Aliante VS. I used the fizik pre-op and liked it but the SMP is a post-op addition. The jury is still out on it now.

Next step is to try a Spesh Romin Evo. If you have one going spare Littledove, we could do a deal.
I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks
  • A bad/ill fitting saddles so much noticeable on a road bike. I've never given it this much thought in the past because I've always had mountain bikes so a lot of the harshness gets taken away with the suspension.

I have a romin evo expert gel 155 arriving for trial next week. If that is of interest I will know by the 25th as I am taking it away on a road trip along with an smp stratos.

Tried the smp forma and didn't like it. Just too hard for my delicate posterior. The fizik alainte looks quite similar to the Spesh toupe which is my current leader of the pack.

Always happy to swap or whatever.

The Toupe is a very different shape compared to the Aliente, much flatter with the Aliente much more hammock shaped. I have a lightly used Aliente if you want to try one, happy to sell or swap for something else?

  • Do carbon rails and bases had anything to comfort or is it just a weight saving thing?
