Hi all.

Been out in the bike today and I have notice when I am turning there seems to be a clicking noise. Not really noticed it before so could have always been there.

Was just wondering if this is normal or is it the bearings or something? Think I should get it checked out?

Cheers

  • its not normal and you should sort it - to know what it may be though: when does it happen, once every wheel revolution, once every crank revolution (both side sides or one), does it stop if you stop pedalling, does it stop if you are out of the saddle etc etc

With that kind of info we may be able to help you pin down the cause and sort it yourself.
  • It's nothing to do with the crank It's to do with the staring itself.

If am off the bike and turn the bars left and right it makes a single clicking noise when it's half way to a full lock in each direction.

Never really noticed it before I was thinking it was maybe the bearings in it?
  • Headset most likely its just a little loose or bearings may be shot if its older - either way its real easy to check of it's loose and to open it up check the bearing are sound and clean and/or replace if its cartridge bearings - one hour tops even if it needs opening up and replacing bearings. Park Tools maintenance is your best friend for this type of stuff -

If you get stuck post on here there are loads of really really knowledgeable people who always help - seriously lining to you other thread with the best will in the world I really don't think you will ever find a mechanic in an lbs who will invest the care time and love into your bike that you will. They just couldn't - it wouldn't be economical for them - that's why its so good to learn to do this type of stuff yourself. With the help of Park Tools link and this forum I now do everything myself unless it requires a very expensive tool I don't have and won't use often enough to justify - or - it's a warranty thing.
  • Thanks for the link and advice I will try and have a look myself.

I have a few events this year, and am out training a lot so want the bike 100% and it's probably due a good decent service before the summer comes around.

I will get the noise checked out and try and get the bike a decent service
  • Any place worth its salt will check a headset for you in five minutes and even if it needs an entire new headset (which seems unlikely with what you describe) that's no big deal in 99% of cases! Unless it's a very old or unusual bike it's almost defo sealed cartridge bearings (unless its an annoying Specialised Mindset job which are a pain in the ass!) which lift out and drop in dead easy.

Cables tapping on head tube? If it's carbon it does resonate.
  • Don't think it's cables I did wounder if it was that. It could be nothing and just me lol.

I will get the bike serviced and get them to check. The bike is a Giant SCR 2.0 frame with Giant Carbon Forks.
  • I have this and it has turned out to be the cables, mine are routed internally in to the frame. When the bars are turned the cable releases tension and makes a noise. Might not be your issue but cables can do this.

  • Chees for the advice it might turn out to be something stupid like that lol

I will get the bike a full service and am sure they will pick any faults up
  • It's the warning of impending doom.
