Hi ok so I bought some mavic crossmax wheels these came with tyres fitted the Rear is a mavic roam that I had my doubts about just because of the tread pattern didn't look good for mud.
A ride over the weekend confirmed that that the rear is waste of time for winter riding in the north east no use at all in mud , polished roots , wet leaves less than half the grip of a rubber queen that is on my 26 inch bike wheels. They are however fast rolling and pretty good on rock , you never know we might get a dry summer to run them

So do I buy a rubber queen that are now known trail king in 650b or am I not being adventurous enough and should be looking for some other new rubber ?

Any one got first hand experience I don't want mud specific I want bit of an all rounder ideally with tubeless compatible if possible I don't run tubeless but like the thicker side wall that I am less likely to rip through 2.2 minimum width

Maxis beaver maybe? Rubber queens are great though, it must be said

did you lower the pressure on the tyre to see if that improved things -
  • Hi pressure wise yes dropping will maybe help but I usually run a round 35 psi dropping below 30 brings a higher risk of pinch punctures unless I go tubeless that the rims and tyres are both built for.
I have run tubeless before and have taken the pressure right down to 15 psi superb grip but heavy going at that pressure !!! and it ultimately wrecked the tyre, but weight is not an issue for me and you still need to carry a tube just in case you split the tyre anyway so I not that sold on tubeless.

Never tried a maxis beaver I will have a look at them , I have fitted a knobby nick duel compound that came with the original wheels , not been a big fan of them in past but with the rain the last few days a ride this weekend was not going to be any fun on the Mavic, pleasantly surprised by it on a muddy ride today but I have torn the sidewall on a couple of them previously although this seems a bit heavier duty then the previous ones I have had , so It might be a short term fix

run them tubeless - first thing I did when I got my crosstrails was swap the tubes out for some sealant although I ran about 30psi anyway
  • Have you considered hans dampf? I've got one on route from germany, £40 inc delivery for the Super Gravity version. Will keep you posted on how good they are :D
  • I'd be all over the dampf, maybe stick to the 2.25 on the back to help clearance. High roller 2's are also good.
