My ass has been killing me after rides recently so I need to invest in some decent shorts. What are the best shorts for comfort? budget is up to £70. Many thanks...

you may not like this idea but lycra bibs are way more comfortable than baggies, the pads are inherently better and less chafing

I agree with the poster above and use bib's, under baggies, in the winter, in the summer I use padded lycra undershorts, again under baggies.

I would personally avoid getting "all in one" baggies that come with padding built in, the padding tends to be rubbish and it doesn't fit closely enough, moves around and is even more uncomfortable.

The padding isn't there as padding, it's intended to absorb sweat and prevent chafing.

    Riding toughens up the butt.

  • +1 for bibs and baggies.
  • I use DHB Aeron pro's from wiggle, really comfortable, had them from my road days, great to ride any type of bike to be honest

Thanks, I will probably go for the DHB's. What is the score with washing them, does it damage the padding? Also, stupid question but do you wear boxers with them?

  • As Cooldad says, washing fine, and NO BOXERS!!!!!! they are designed to be next to your skin

It's there for both reasons. What does padding do, if not prevent chafing?

It's not intended to make for a cushy type saddle.
Back when men were men, chamois leather was used.

No, your memory is failing. That was your tricycle when you were three.

So you're agreeing that they used to make tyres from solid rubber. How then, exactly, is my memory failing? You're the one who's old enough to be losing your marbles.

Its prime function might not be to increase comfort, but any extra padding between your butt and your saddle is going to help.

Not really or everyone would be riding with squishy gel filled saddles.

First ride destroyed me. 2nd ride was noticeably easier/less painful. By my 5th/6th all day ride I barely noticed it. Just ride your bike more, and forget wasting £70 on something that really isn't needed. It's just conditioning, really.
