Is the ultegra 6870 Di2 better shifting than the mech Dura Ace 9000? Or to put it another way, is it worth that little bit extra for the younger brothers electronic version of the mech top dog?

That depends. Is your priority weight savings, electronic shirfting or budget?
It's not a like for like comparison. There's no correct answer. It's down to your own preferences.

Have to agree with Al - the quality of shifting on the 9000 mechanical and latest generation electronic is so close and so good, that it's down to personal preference. If you do go 9000 mechanical, just make sure you get the 9001 levers - clearly some teething issues with the original 9000 levers so they changed the cable position on the 6800 mechanical levers and replicated this on the new 9001 levers.

Having said that, much prefer the aesthetic of the 9000 chainset. I am currently doing a mixed build of 6870 levers and shifters and 9000 chainset and brakes.
