Hi all, I have decided to go for a mountain bike over a Hybrid.
Please give your views on which bike above you would choose, best spec and value.
The prices maybe slightly misleading as I will hopefully get a discount on the one I choose
I will be using the bike on and off road through the woods cycle paths etc
Nothing mad though.
Thanks

At those prices, none. All have pretty rubbish forks, for the prices you can do much better.I don't do smileys.

This.
To expand on it, here are a few bikes you should research into, with prices varying from £350 to £550, and spec varying similarly.
Calibre 2.2
Voodoo Hoodoo
Carrera Vulcan
Calibre .50
Rockrider 8.1
Voodoo Bizango
To make it even easier, the Bizango is a 29er, very well reviewed. The Rockrider is a 26er, but better specced and again very well reviewed. Calibre 2.2 is a fantastic budget option.
In my personal opinion, the Calibre is the way forward, but if you want a bike that you can potentially take to trail centres/exploring if you develop an interest in it, the Rockrider is the best option.0 -
Try and get one of last years models for a better deal, move up in spec with spending the same amount.0

Thanks for your advice its appreciated
Are the bikes you refer to 2014 models or what year ?
Thanks0 -
Some brands don't 'update' every year. Not a bad thing. But labeled 2014 models are usually worse value.0

Whats your advice on the thread please ?
Which bike/s would you recommend ?
Thanks0 -
The list Cookeh made is pretty good. For your intended riding I'd be tempted by the Rockrider.I don't do smileys.

Does the Rockrider 8.1 only come in the one colour do you know ?
I believe there is only the one colour, yes. But lets face it, colour is hardly a very important factor.0 -

Carrera vulcan
Calibre 2.2
In no particular order. Still thats the easy bit done0 -

Yep im sure you are right, but if I was struggling to choose between 2 bikes the look/colour could swing it in my view0 -
Spec should swing it, not colour, of the three you mention, rule out the Vulcan, it's a very decent bike for the money but can't compete with the other two.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

For me it would be a shootout between the Bizango & Rockrider,Vulcan def not in same league0
-
For me it would be the Rockrider 8.1
Excellent for the price, better than many bikes costing twice as much.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

There's no more advice to give. The above is the best you will do for the money. I've seem some absolutely horrific 2014 bikes from 'popular' manufactures at up to £1k with worse spec.0
