Sticky Got £300-£500 to spend

A couple of people have replied to me regarding my question on what bike to buy MTB or Hybrid for up to £500.
They have quoted me to have a look at the above sticky.
However the thread dates back to Sept 2012.
Im sure now that there must be better bikes out on the market for that price, as things always move on in life,
Or are those same model bikes still available and still the best value for money ?
Perhaps the models have been updated for 2014.

Same principle, and pretty much the same bikes.

Rockrider 8.1 is the one to go for at this budget, tbh - although it is slightly over-budget.
If you want to get a bike at the lower end of your budget, look at the Calibre 2.2 - excellent for the money, but the spec is much lower than the Rockrider.0
