What frame?

Another question from the noob, after looking into getting my frame powder coated and new parts added, it's not going to be worth it, as it's a 5 year old carrera Vulcan frame.

So my question is, on a budget (probably used I know) of £150 roughly, what sort of frames are available/should I be looking at.

Thank you for any advice offered, this forum is helping me so much

Is there anything wrong with the frame? Are decent pieces of kit.
  • No, nothing wrong with it, I just assumed (rightly or wrongly lol) that being a cheaper bike at the time, the frame was probably cr*p...

    My Scott MC30 :D

Depends on what sort of riding you'll be doing. Do you want fs or hard tail? What sort of fork travel are you after etc etc.

  • I'm just a trail rider, nothing special, was hoping for 120mm fork travel, I don't know how true it is, but my frame has 100mm travel, and I for told before that you shouldn't increase the fork travel above what the frame was designed for,

Hardtail I think, I haven't been riding MTB's for long enough again, to get the skills back, so I think hardtail, plus I haven't owned a newer FS bike, so don't know if it will make any difference to my riding

Might be able to get a Cotic Soul or On-One Inbred 2nd hand at that price.

EDIT: Can get the Inbred new for £120 - here

    One of these

Great ebay seller Fab frame - check some of the recent builds in my bikes section. Has other colour also

I'd keep the Vulcan. It will take a 120mm fork easily, is reasonably light, pretty tough.

If you're set on a frame Charge Duster's sound good and are available cheap on eBay, I've seen a few on here recently.

Yep, I have one - and very nice it is too

I wouldn't put a 120 fork on it though. It really does have very slim tubes and is pretty flexy. Nothing wrong with that for what I do - but I'd be wary of using it for anything lairy or if you're a 'larger' rider

The Inbred is excellent for £120

Souls tend to go for about £200 on eBay (I looked at a lot before buying my Duster)

I'd be tempted to keep the frame and spend the money elsewhere

Same frame as the Kraken/Fury, more or less, isn't it (possibly without their double butting?) ? Both of those take 120mm no problem (Fury comes with 120mm OE).
  • Thanks for all your comments, I think I will keep the frame currently then, the only reason I thought of changing it is because I thought it was a budget frame and wouldn't be strong enough, but then, if it does ever break, then I shall change it, in the mean time, I think I will purchase some rockshox Reba rl, and some Shimano SLX brakes
    Thanks

Sounds like a good plan to me. I'm just in the process of upgrading my 2007 Kraken to use for local XC type rides (bridleways, woodland trails, towpaths, moors etc).

Nothing wrong with that frame, if it was a Rockhopper you'd probably think it was fine, well the Vulcan frame is the same weight (size for size) and will take the same length forks, and yes the Vulcan is the same as the Kraken and Fury frame under the paint.

See link in my sig for what can be done to that age Carrera frame (same from 2005-2010 - the later frame with the gusset between top and seat tube is heavier).
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • So definately ok to be looking at 120mm forks then?

Then I just need to choose a powder coat colour ;)

Yes, the frame will take them no problem - I'm just about to add 120mm Epicons to my Kraken (you can get them brand new for £135 on Ebay, from a UK seller).

That's the difficult part, lol. Depends if you want subtle or loud. Or gloss black with silver metalflake looks subtle until the sun shines on it, then it goes all 70s disco pimp
  • Where? I can only find 100mm epicons on there

Colour wise I am either thinking white frame and orange or blue parts, or black frame with red parts

Boring colours but work well haha

They come set to 100mm travel, but it's an easy job to convert them to 80, 120 or 140mm, with no special tools needed (I set mine to 120mm the other night, and it was dead easy), plus you can add a sag indicator O ring while you've got them apart:

    http://muddygoose.wordpress.com/2012/10 ... epicon-x2/

I got mine from Ebay seller Pedalbits. He's only got remote lockout ones currently (£150), but he regularly gets restocked in both versions in black or white. The crown lockout version I bought is £135 (cheapest I've seen them anywhere in the UK). I was tempted to order X1s from Taiwan for just a few quid more (just for the blue declas), but if I'd got stung by HMRC then it would've made them a fair bit pricier, and it wasn't worth paying an extra £50 or so just for blue graphics.

Thanks for that, just sent you a PM with a couple of queries :)
