DH Trousers/Pants

Hi all,

I usually wear shorts and knee/shin pads when I ride (I only ride DH now really cause I'm too lazy to ride uphill) and during the summer, not a problem.

However when it starts to get a bit colder and muddier I do find myself longing for some proper DH trousers now and then.

What would be ideal for me would be some that have a sort of built in knee pad so I dont need to wear my pads underneath, long enough to go all the way down to the shoes (MX pants seem to be short to tuck into boots quite often) and in an understated (for DH) colour like black maybe with some white highlights or something.

I know that is quite a specific list and I have been looking around on CRC and Troy Lee's website aswell as One Industries etc but havent found anything yet. Does anyone know anything that sort of fits that description?

Cheers

CRC have got some nice Alpinestars trousers half price. I just got some for £60. They are loose around the knees to accommodate knee pads. If the knee pads were attached to the trousers and tight enough to stay in place you would have very restrictive trousers. I don't know of any with built in pads.
If you're riding DH to be lazy then you're not riding fast enough :-) Get on the pedals and sprint!
  • Haha I can put up with a bit of sprinting but not slogging uphill for 10 minutes! just not me,

These the alpinestars ones that you're thinking of?

    That's the ones.
  • What are they like round the ankle? look like they would sit quite high with that elasticated bottom thingy, or do they fold over that? Obviously a bit fit dependant but would appreciate a general idea.

Elasticated around the ankle. The elastic sits on my ankle, just about right really. I'm 6'1" and have them with 34" waist.
  • Ok cheers, I'm 5'11/6' and would have a 32" waist so sounds like a similar fit, I'm torn basically between them and these:

I like the designs of a lot of the Thor stuff but they all look really short :/

I also have a pair of them. Awkward to get on over knee pads. I prefer the Alpinestars, you pay for the name with Troy Lee.
  • Ok cheers mate, will go for the alpinestars I reckon, just need to try and find them somewhere in my size and in the colour I'm after or I will have to settle for the other black colour scheme.

You ever tried any of the Thor kit?

Yes. I have a couple Thor jerseys. Good quality if you don't mind the eye melting colour schemes.

Had a look at the Royal kit? They're pretty roomy for knee pads and nice quality. Designed specifically for MTBing so you don't need to worry about them being cut for MX. One of the few companies I've tried that fit my legs comfortably without having to go a size or two up in waist size (Altura being another).

The SP247's are black with a little bit of white, exactly what you're looking for.
  • Some of their trousers do come in some more subtle colour schemes, like these:

Problem is like I say they just look really short below the knee, and they have the big leather heat resistant panel that all MX trousers have but I could get over that.

Just seen those SP247's, they may have just taken pole position, good call... anyone have any? or know someone who does?

I have a pair of Nema Podiums in black & white. Do the job and usually on offer at CRC. BTW I wear my knee and shin pads over the top of them, stop them getting too badly scuffed when I bin it.

I have the older Royal Racing DH pants. They are good quality and cheap. I forgot I had them to be honest, I should probably dig them out!
  • Well I've ordered a set of the SP247's so will have to wait and see how they are.

Thanks for all the help everyone
