Hi,

I decided that I need / would like to have new wheels for my bike as the old ones. I was looking around for decent pair of wheels / researched all possible forums with similar budged, but is quite hard to find answer for my question , some of suggested wheels are not available anymore , so I decided to create new topic.

Ok so I am looking for wheelset with budged around £250 - £300

My 1st thought was :
Fulcrum Red Power XL - £225
others on the list are :
Mavic Crossride Disc MTB Wheelset 2014 -£170

To be honest I dont know where I should look at..I've checked most of known by me online shops so far.

Any ideas?

Have a look at Superstar Components >click me< (I assumed these were for XC, either way, options for DH/AM are in the links on the left). Quite well regarded on these forums.

Axle size of fork (9,15, 20mm), rear axle type and size, rim width (do you run wide tyres?), your weight, your bike, your riding style? The more info you can give then the better we can recommend.

Everything seems to be measured and accurate here. Just get a superstars xc set for £100, will do a job fine.

They'll do the job, but that wasn't really the point :?

I'd look at the Superstar hubs on Crest rims, if they're still doing them for £200 they're a good deal.

Even better, that's an absolute steal frankly!

If you want something a bit nicer I'm selling some DT240s on Alpines in VGC.

I looked on them before , but problem with this ones is that there are only white rims left for this price and I dont really think white will fit to my bike...I dont have any part of my bike in white.

    Selling? How much? Condition? Photos?

Any other ideas for the wheels ? : )
  • I was the same when I got mine last year, they didn't have any black flow rims left, only white so I opted white with red hubs even though black really went with my bike and I had no white on it.

So glad I did now, I think white rims look great and racey.

With the money you save You could get some white pedals, grips etc. Just suggestions but 180 is a top price. Post a PIC of ya bike.

Ok , I dont have any real photo of my bike anywhere close so I found it on other website...It looks like this :
    2412273-hardtail-merida-matts-tfs-900-d-18-93-5.jpg

I know that price for those wheels is a good deal now, and apparently they are only ones mentioned here which are still available.
Definitely some new white parts should go along with wheels to make it looks better. Hmm...i think I would rather want stay with black anyway.

Think the white would go quite well with that tbh!

Incredibly (or not if you are not a weight weenie), the white coating adds 40g a wheel.

    Sent you a message alfa.

It's not quite 40g/rim, more like 30g innit? Still a big chunk to go from an anodised finish which is very tough, to a powder coated finish which will chip.

OK so conclusion so far is: get the Superstars swich evo hubs on crest rims but need to wait until the will have ready wheelsets in black available [ just more expensive than ... £180 ;/ ]

    No other ideas, no ?

Have a look at the more expensive Superstar wheelsets: trizoid hubs are better quality, and a range of rims. And with the drop down menus can ensure get the right sizes.

You have standard QR front and rear, so that is what you choose!

OK, I just found out that alexrims evo supercomp are wider than my actual rims and I have no idea why on producer site it says that can hold up to 2.1 if I ride on my Alexrims TD17 2.2. On good hub apparently.

Anyway..in this case I could consider these wheels , which seems be a good deal but! Cat really find nothing about them, they are compare to Stans in most cases.

    This: £230

I am worrying a bit about durability...If you look on those pictures

    My rims TD17:

Does it make evo super comp them less durable? Only one chamber .

Crest on Superstar Hubs are still available for £180 - white only - http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=496

The bearings that come standard in the hubs aren't great quality though, but its still a superb price!

They are XC rims, and for that will be fine. You can't tell from looking at the profile.

I think you are overthinking this a bit.

This is why I chose stans flow over the crest on the superstar wheel set. For 200g more total weight than the crest they have a more strengthened profile hens being able to take a lot more punishment.

I know for my kind of riding the crest would of 99% of the time been fine but there might of been that 1% where I might whack the wheel on the edge of a rock or hit a big root at speed and knacker my expensive rim

get the arch ex rim. Its lighter than the flow but stronger than the crest
  • Hello the supercomp rims look skinny as they are a high end welded lightwieght rim compaired to a low end pin joint basic rim. they are perfect for XC use and are tubeless ready. The supercomp alloy they use is custom and allows Alexrims to make a really nice light but stiff (for xc use) rim compaired to the basic aluminium used in the cheaper ranges.

alternatively look at the pacenti CL25 range (its made in the same factory as stans and to be honest pretty much identical in performance) or the sentinel range.

any questions feel free to drop us an email as there are millions of choices.

    Regards, Neil (superstar)
